Uploading your data to an expert could save your business.

Last year’s devastating floods gave an unfortunate yet timely reminder to businesses who hadn’t taken the necessary precautions to safeguard their electronic data.
Scores of firms lost valuable and in some cases irreplaceable information stored on computers as flood waters swept through offices and business premises.

Those who had invested in off-site back up systems were the more fortunate ones, even those whose premises were badly affected by the water.

One company that was flooded was Chesterfield Powermade Designs, the makers of Solo electric golf trolleys.

The office was awash on the afternoon of June 25 and it was two days before the emergency services allowed staff to return. Inside they found stock and equipment, including computers, swimming in flood water.

Fortunately the company are clients of Sheffield-based BackUp4Business, which had stored all of Powermade’s information on its four secure computer servers in Manchester and Sheffield. What could have been a complete disaster was averted by Powermade’s forward thinking. A new computer was bought and the firm’s complete set of data was restored from BackUp4Business’ servers in a matter of hours.

Automatic data backup is a simple, secure and cost effective method of ensuring that computer generated information is copied to a secure place for easy and speedy retrieval.

Companies using BackUp4Business know that human error is taken out of the copying process and that 128bit encryption ensures security.

It’s not just floods that present potential data loss situations. Companies who don’t back up data, or leave copies in the office, even in a safe, are open to loss from fire, theft, viruses, hard drive malfunctions and the actions of malicious members of staff.

BackUP4Business was set up two years ago by Sheffield businessman Morton Bell, who previously had a document storage business serving law, insurance and accountancy firms.

He realised the need for the secure back up of computer generated information and introduced his new business using systems previously used only by top London banks.

Morton said: “There are other ways of backing up electronic data but our online service is far more reliable and extremely cost effective with clients only paying for the volume of data stored. Once a client signs up they can back up whatever data they like and we advise them to do it on a daily basis. This system takes the human error out of backing up data which is done automatically off-site.

The service is ideal for any company’s business contingency planning and disaster recovery strategies.

BackUp4Business will visit new customers and back up all required files onto an external hard drive before uploading them to the servers, saving companies the time required to move large amounts of data. Once initial installation is complete, the daily update done online by the client in their own office is easy and speedy.

BackUp4Business has a national client portfolio, but all staff are Sheffield based and the company offers telephone technical support. The website also has a full user guide and video tutorials.

- First For Business Magazine, July Edition
